Burn, Baby, Burn! Eek – I over did it!

We have all done it – we have been outside enjoying the weather, underestimated the power of the sun and burnt ourselves.

I did this several years ago on the Norfolk coast.  We were planning to go for a walk along the coast, so I wore shorts, walking boots and a fleece as it was extremely windy. One of our friends was feeling unwell, so we sat on the beach, amongst the rocks – wrapped up against the cold. However, the sunrays were strong and my legs burnt – so bad I didn’t wear a skirt for another 2 years.  I had a line where my socks came and boy did it hurt.

Today I am more cautious – my legs are lily white as a result!!

Here are a few ideas on how to deal with sunburn, heatstroke and more.

Sunscreen Recipe – from The Essential Life, 3rdedition

  • ½ cup olive oil
  • ¼ cup fractionated coconut oil
  • ¼ cup beeswax
  • 2 tbsp shea butter
  • 1 tsp vitamin E oil
  • 2 tbsp zinc oxide
  • 12 drops helichrysum

Place all ingredients except zinc oxide and helichrysum in a glass mixing bowl. Fill a sauce pan with 2 to 3 inches of water and turn to medium heat.Place the glass bowl over the heat and stir until melted. Remove from the heat and add the helichrysum essential oil and zinc oxide.  Pour into a glass container and store in a cool place.  Apply lotion to skin before sun exposure. Reapply as needed.

Sunburn Spray – from The Essential Life, 3rdedition

  • 1 cup aloe vera juice
  • ¼ cup fractionated coconut oil
  • 1 tsp vitamin E oil
  • 8 drops lavender
  • 8 drops melaleuca
  • 8 drops roman chamomile

Combine products in a 16oz spray bottle.  Shake well and spray on sunburned skin. Repeat as needed.

Heat Stroke – from The Essential Life, 3rdedition

Simply place a couple of drops of peppermint in a spray bottle with water and spray the back of the neck. Or simply rub one drop of peppermint on the back of the neck. Always dilute for children and sensitive skins.

Heat Rash

I have used lavender and melaleuca and the rash went away within 15 minutes – amazingly quick.

Best of all cover-up to avoid burning – a large brimmed hat, a floaty cover-up, a parasol. So chic!

Happy holidays.
